Betfred Sportsbook was a little late to the Maryland sports betting scene, but they carved out a role as a quality bookmaker. With odds that were a touch more generous than other operators offered, Betfred worked hard to play catch-up and became a solid alternative to the other sportsbooks in the state.
In this Betfred Sportsbook review, we covered all you needed to know before signing up with one of Maryland’s newest operators, including how to sign up, what bonuses you could expect, and an overall rating of Betfred.
Joining Betfred in Maryland was a breeze and only took a few short minutes to complete. In rare cases, you may have been asked to provide additional information/verification, but most users were signed up and ready to play in 10 minutes or less.
Here were the steps you needed to take to join Betfred Maryland:
Different types of bets that were offered on Betfred Sportsbook MD
This is a partial list of the bet types you could find at this MD sportsbook. We highly recommended exploring the different markets and figuring out which betting type was right for you!
Moneyline
Moneyline bets are the most straightforward option when sports betting, as they simply involve picking a winner regardless of the margin of victory or the number of points the winning team scores. This is a great bet type for beginning players to get their feet wet.
Over/Under
If you’re not as comfortable with picking winners, playing an over/under (or “total”) wager might be a better fit. With this bet type, you’re often picking whether the combined number of points scored in a game will be over or under a certain total as determined by Betfred. Over/under bets are also very common for player props where you would bet on outcomes such as over or under a set number of points, rebounds, strikeouts, saves, or rushing yards.
Parlay Bets
When you play a parlay, you combine multiple betting interests in a single bet. You could bet on the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Ravens, and Washington Capitals to win their games, or you could combine those three scenarios into one bet to make more while risking less money. However, if you bet a parlay with those three teams and you win two out of three, you lose the entire bet.
Future Bets
A futures bet anticipates a long-term result. For example, if you bet on the Ravens to win the Super Bowl before the season starts or the Orioles to win the American League East title in the regular season, that would be a futures bet. Usually, the further in advance of the outcome you place your bet, the better the odds you’ll get. However, the closer to the outcome, the more likely you are to place a winning bet because you have more information. Risk management is key here.
Is Betfred Sportsbook legal in Maryland?
No, Betfred Sportsbook is not legal in Maryland. Betfred opened its doors to Maryland bettors in February 2023, just three months after the first six sportsbooks began accepting wagers in the Old Line State. However, it closed in Maryland on July 31, 2024
Because of the later launch, Betfred didn't see the same immediate success as other operators and held a smaller percentage of the state’s betting handle.
Betfred betting app in Maryland
Betfred was unique in that they had a Maryland sports betting app rather than just one for every state. While other operators in the state had apps that were wide-reaching for all their players, Betfred’s Maryland focus allowed them to target promotions to those in the Old Line State.
The Google Play store showed more than 10,000 downloads of the Maryland Betfred app. For an app that launched relatively recently (and couldn’t begin accepting bets until three months prior), Betfred’s Maryland growth had been reasonably steady.

Betfred accepted the following deposit methods:
Betfred did not accept Apple Pay, Skrill, or Venmo in Maryland. Additionally, Betfred did not offer withdrawals back to cards, even if it was the same card you used to make a deposit.
How was the customer support at Betfred sportsbook MD?
Just like with the app, Betfred had its customer service sectioned off by state to more effectively help players. Maryland customers could access 24/7 customer support through the chat, and if the chat became disconnected, you could follow up through email with the same representative you were working with before (this happened to me while reaching out to customer service).
You likely needed to reach out to support to find an answer to even basic questions, as the website and app lacked FAQ pages to cover the basics. Even information that seemed like it should be readily available (such as accepted deposit types, how to withdraw your winnings, and what parlays were eligible for bonuses) wasn’t organized in that way.
The good news was that the chat was very responsive. You wouldn’t sit and wait long for a response when you were connected with a representative. When I reached out about my issue, they had an answer for me before I could finish typing in my account information (the issue was not specific to my account).
There were a few other options for Maryland bettors to reach out to as well:
The lone Betfred Sportsbook retail location in Maryland was at Long Shot’s OTB Parlor in Frederick. You can find as many as 88 video monitors covering live horse races, automated tellers, and Maryland Lottery games there, as well as a restaurant with 24 beers on tap to enjoy.
Our expert opinion of Betfred Sportsbook Maryland
On the whole, Betfred Sportsbook was a good but not great sports betting option for Maryland players. Some of Betfred’s features really elevated the sportsbook, but other areas left bettors scratching their heads.
Betfred’s daily odds boosts could be a nice option for regular players, and we really appreciated this feature. We found Betfred’s lines were generally more player-friendly than other books, with more of the “juice” ending up in players’ pockets.
However, the rating took a hit because it was hard to find information. The app and website designs were a bit stale, and the promotions offered were limited at times. Part of this could have been because of how new Betfred was to Maryland, and we expected these things to improve over time.
