Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees Wednesday Preview–Wells for Bounceback Performance Against Yankees

Game 2 of the best-of-three series between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees takes place Wednesday at 7:05 at Yankee Stadium. Righty Tyler Wells is set to take the mound for Baltimore, and lefty Nestor Cortes is scheduled to man the bump for New York.

New York won game 1 of the series Tuesday night with a 6-5, extra-innings win and are -130 favorites with a 8.5 run total when their AL East rivals meet tonight.

Orioles Humming Along

The Orioles have been playing good baseball, winning three of their past five, and are three games behind Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East. The Orioles are 16-9 as the away team and 15-7 when listed as the underdog. The offense boasts the third-best wRC+ and second-most runs scored in the American League against Southpaws.

Wells (3-1, 2.94) is coming off a tough outing against the Los Angeles Angels, allowing three earned runs and a pair of bombs in a 6-5 home loss. Wells is serving up 1.73 bombs per nine frames but has the lowest walk rate and WHIP of his brief career. The sample size is small, but Yankee hitters are slashing .209/.221/.358/.579 over 67 at-bats against the Baltimore righty.

Yankees Catching Fire

Injuries have plagued the Yankees, but they are getting healthier. They sit six games behind the Rays and three behind the Orioles in the AL East standings. New York is 17-10 at Yankee Stadium but 19-16 as the favorite. New York hasn’t hit well against righties this season, posting a 99 wRC+ and plating the sixth most runs in the AL against right-handed pitching.

Cortes (4-2, 5.21) is coming off a strong road start against Toronto, scattering five hits with two earned runs and six punchouts over six innings in the 4-2 victory. Cortes has allowed the most walks and home runs per nine innings since becoming a starter during the 2021 season. Cortes has manhandled the Orioles during his career against Baltimore lumber, with Orioles sticks slashing .175/.223/.227/.450 over 97 plate appearances.

Phil’s Best Bet for Orioles vs. Yankees: Baltimore Orioles F5 +118

Wells is coming off a tough outing, but I expect a bounceback performance from him Wednesday night against the Yankees. Wells has been effective this season outside of his last start, and his 0.79 WHIP is tough to overlook, even against the capable Yankees offense.

Wells receives an average of 4.6 runs of support per start, and that should be enough for the Baltimore sticks to touch up a sometimes erratic Cortes. The Yankees hurler has struggled a bit with walks, and the subsequent home run, and this Orioles team rakes lefties. That should allow Baltimore to take the lead at the end of five innings and win our bet.
